Marriage Equality Senate Hearing - Jan 31st

This is our opportunity to stand up for SB214 Marriage Equality

hearing

Senate Committee Hearing Scheduled for January 31, 2012 in Annapolis

The first hearing for the Marriage Equality bill SB214 has been scheduled for January 31st. PFLAG & "The Coalition" (Marylanders' for Marriage Equality) is asking you to support this legislation by being there. Last year (the photo above) we filled the room for red. As you can see we worked hard to fill the room. It had a positive influence. We will be wearing RED again this year.

This year we are planning on having a larger presence, but we can only do this with your attendence. PFLAG Baltimore County president Mark Patro, and other PFLAG members will be taking the day off from work to support this legislation. We will be gathering at 9am outside the James Senate Office Building.

Response to Dr. Ruth M. Jacobs and Michael McManus' Opinion Published in Gazette.net

Bob & Lori Hollander of Relationships Work

As licensed social workers, relationship experts and family counselors for 30 years, we are appalled at the statements made by Dr. Ruth Jacobs and Michael J. McManus, who do not indicate that they have training or a license in the field of psychology or mental health.

When we are assuming a position about the LGBT community, in order to move beyond the truth of mere “self-evident” personal opinion, prejudice or bias, we must ask this question, what science do we rely upon that is consistent with the position that we are taking?

During the last three decades, organizations representing 1.5 million U.S. health professionals (doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, and educators) completely and catagorically refute the assertions that you are making here. The question now for you is this: what science are you relying upon that contradicts the most well respected national organization in existence at this time? Anti-intellectualism is a dangerous thing, when one cavalierly makes statement about scientific matters that have no foundation in current existing scholarship; it is misleading and does a great disserve to us all.
